Bernhard W.F. Kemmerling, affectionately known as Bernie, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2026, in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Born on May 19, 1934, in Philadelphia, Bernie lived a life marked by dedication, love, and quiet strength.
A graduate of Lower Moreland High School, Bernie further pursued his artistic passions at the Philadelphia College of the Arts. His career as a pattern maker for Boeing Vertol was a testament to his skill and precision, notably contributing to the intricate work on the Chinook helicopter. His hands, skilled and steady, were as adept with power tools as they were gentle with the orchids he cherished.
Bernie was a man defined by his kindness and calming presence—a quiet, intelligent soul who spoke thoughtfully, yet his stubbornness shone through, a proud reflection of his German heritage. His easy-going nature, coupled with a subtle sense of humor, endeared him deeply to those who knew him.
He served his country honorably in the Army, stationed in Hawaii, an experience that enriched his appreciation for nature—a passion that carried through to his hobbies. Bernie loved to sit on his deck, watching the birds, tending to his garden, and capturing the world through the lens of his camera. His love for animals and the natural world was a constant source of joy.
His marriage to Susan, spanning an incredible 62 years, was the center of his life. They were inseparable companions, their bond enduring until her passing before him. The love he held for her was profound and unwavering. Though their son Todd has also passed, Bernie's legacy continues through his daughter Lisa Benton, her husband Brian, and their daughter Tori, who brought him immense joy. He is also fondly remembered by his nephews, nieces, and their children.
Bernie's practicality was evident not only in his professional accomplishments but also in his personal life. He was handy with tools, always preferring the best quality.
Retiring early from Boeing allowed Bernie the gift of time—a chance to embrace his greatest pride: spending treasured moments with his granddaughter and exploring the world through travel and cruises. These adventures, shared with family, were among his happiest times.
Bernhard W.F. Kemmerling was preceded in death by his beloved wife Susan, his precious son Todd, his mother Elizabeth, his father Bernhard, his sister Elizabeth Kay, and his brother Eugene. Though he has left this world, the imprint of his gentle spirit, unwavering love, and the memories he crafted with those around him remain vivid and cherished.
A viewing will be held at Pleasantville United Church of Christ, 3424 Limekiln Pike, Chalfont, PA 18914, on March 28, 2026 at 10 am.The funeral service will follow at the same location on March 28, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
Bernie's life was one of quiet devotion—to family, to craft, and to the simple beauties of nature. His memory will forever resonate in the hearts of those who loved him and in the gentle rustle of birdsong he so dearly loved to watch.
