Bruce Burdell Burkart, of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, passed away on August 27, 2026. He was born on October 15, 1931, in Doylestown, and lived a life defined by service, commitment, humor, and deep love for both his family and his community.

A graduate of North Wales High School’s Class of 1949, Bruce was an active part of the student body and a multi-sport varsity letter recipient in baseball, football, and basketball. His lasting connection to his school community continued through his legacy membership in the North Penn Alumni Athletic Association. Not long after, he answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Army during the Korean War and serving from 1951 to 1954.

Bruce built a successful career as a sales representative at Georgia-Pacific, where he worked for almost 27 years. Alongside his professional life, he devoted himself wholeheartedly to public service. Over the years, he served as the Borough’s first building inspector, was elected Borough Tax Collector for 24 years, served multiple terms on New Britain Borough Council, worked as Judge of Elections, and gave his time as the Borough Historian. These roles reflected a man who dedicated his life to community service and leadership, and who performed many other acts of citizenship that quietly strengthened the place he called home.

His care for the community could also be seen in the work of his hands and the generosity of his time. Bruce spent years repairing and maintaining the Library building before and after it was deeded to the Borough. He helped restore the Walter Harvey WWI Memorial and mentored an Eagle Scout project in George Bush Park in Buckingham. He also volunteered at the Mercer Museum and, together with his wife Nancy, gave of themselves through Bucks County Meals on Wheels. After Nancy’s passing, Bruce continued delivering meals four days a week in her honor, a beautiful expression of both devotion and service. His selfless nature extended even further through his longtime commitment as a Red Cross blood donor, giving more than 22 gallons of blood over the years.

Bruce will also be remembered for the way he carried himself through life: selfless, quick-witted, and always with the best sense of humor. He had a gift for making people smile, and his steady presence touched many lives. In recognition of the lasting mark he and his family made on their community, on November 12, 2013, New Britain Borough Council renamed Borough Hall as Burkart Hall in honor of Bruce and his family’s contributions.

For all he accomplished, Bruce’s proudest joy was his family. He had an immense love for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and that love will remain one of his greatest legacies. He is survived by his son, Brian Burkart; by his granddaughters Tyler Ruch, Erika Brunner, Dustyn Strosnider, and Brandi Hughes; and by his great-grandchildren Zevin, Bryce, and Sienna Ruch, Adalynn and Deklan Brunner, and Clara Schaffer and Kelsi Hughes. Each of them was a treasured part of his life, and the family he loved so deeply will continue to carry his memory forward with pride and affection.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nancy Burkart, with whom he shared 64 years of marriage, and by his children Kevin Burkart and Lisa Burkart-Chalmers.

Bruce Burdell Burkart leaves behind a life well lived and a community made better by his presence. His example of loyalty, generosity, humor, and steadfast service will be remembered with gratitude, and his love will remain in the hearts of those who knew him.

Relatives and friends are invited to Bruce’s memorial service, 11 a.m., Friday, Sep. 11 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 301 North Main Street, Doylestown. Interment will be held privately in Whitemarsh Memorial Park, Ambler.
