Cornelia Mitchell Humphries 105+ Years Young

Cornelia Mitchell Humphries died January 21, 2026, at her home in New Britain. The amazing daughter of Carrie and Claude Mitchell was born in Irvine, Kentucky August 5th, 1920. She was the wife of the late Charles Humphries, married 61 years. She graduated from Irvine High School as valedictorian of her class and went on to graduate from Duke University, later earning 45 credits towards her Doctorate. She moved to New Britain Borough in 1960 with her family and has lived there for over 60 years.

Her professional career spanned more than 40 years focusing on social work including working for the Child Welfare Department and the Social Services Department. Cornelia last served as a member of the District Office of the Wissahickon School District in the key role of Home and School Visitor for the entire District retiring in 1985.

She has been notable as a community activist advocating for causes such as bus stops to provide safety for children and most recently working to successfully rally for the continuation of the New Britain Borough train stop.

She has been a life-long tennis enthusiast, a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and she enjoys music and especially dancing. She was a member of the tap-dancing troupe, the Toe Tappers and a Sr. Olympics walking champion. A scholarship in her name and her parents’ names, the Mitchell Marcum Scholarship, provided scholarships to 14 high school students from the Irvine, KY area over a 10-year period.

She was an amazing and wonderful Mother of 4 children, Charles Kent Humphries and wife Grainne of Arlington, VA, Ellen Humphries Ponder and husband David of Edgewater, MD, Michael Humphries and wife Brenda of New Boston, NH and Carol Humphries and her husband Mike Wilt of Silver Spring, MD. She also has 7 granddaughters (Lindsay, Carrie, Jenny, Michelle, Sarah, Katie, and Anna) and 6 great grandchildren (Grayson, Ryan, Sully, Zoey, Emma, Peyton).

Everybody loved Cornelia and the great smile and sparkle in her eye. Her friends and family would describe her as remarkable for her positive attitude, great sense of humor, caring nature, energy and zest for life!

Relatives and friends will be received on Friday, January 23, 2026 from 6:30 - 8:30 PM, Reed & Steinbach Funeral Home.  Memorial service will held at 9:30 AM on Saturday, January 24, 2026, Trinity Episcopal Church, 2631 Durham Road, Buckingham, PA 18912.
