George A. Achilles

May 20, 1948 — June 9, 2025

George Arthur Achilles of Doylestown passed away peacefully on Monday, June 9, 2025 at Abington Hospital, surrounded by family. He was 77.

He was the loving husband of Pat Achilles for 37 years, and father to three adoring children.

Born in Staten Island, New York, he was the son of the late Eileen and Arthur Achilles.

George was a proud Lehigh University alumnus and member of the Glee Club.

A man of strong faith, he was a devoted parishioner of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and member of the choir for over 50 years. Throughout the years, he served on the Vestry, led the youth group, and attended many joyful choir retreats in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

Passionate about choral music, George sang locally with Cantus Novus, at the Carmelite Monastery in Philadelphia, and cantored at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church. He brought laughter to local stages as part of the Bucks County Gilbert & Sullivan Society, St. Paul's Players, Town & Country Players and Spencer Productions.

George was a systems analyst, working at Independence Blue Cross in Philadelphia for many years, and retiring in 2017. In his retirement, he began volunteering at Doylestown Hospital, bringing smiles to many in their time of need.

An avid Philadelphia sports fan, he fulfilled a lifelong dream of attending Phillies spring training in Florida this year. He was a Boy Scout and Scout Dad for many years, and greatly enjoyed the outdoors. He was also a member of the Doylestown Masonic Lodge.

George befriended people with ease — whether commuting on the train, driving for Uber, traveling with family, or through his hobbies and music — and was known for his animated storytelling and wonderful sense of humor.

In addition to his wife, George is survived by his daughter Laura Pankoe of Doylestown, PA; daughter Julie Benns (Brian) of West Orange, NJ; son Tom Achilles of Brooklyn, NY; brother-in-law Robert Steiner (Anne) of Spinnerstown, PA; three grandsons Joshua, Jeffrey and Rowan; as well as a beloved grand-pup he took on many adventures. He will be missed by so many.

A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, June 16, 2025 at Reed and Steinbach Funeral Home, 2335 Lower State Road, Doylestown. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 17 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 84 East Oakland Avenue, Doylestown, PA 18901, where friends and family may call from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass. A reception will follow the Mass at Paxson Hall. Interment will be private.
