Joseph “Joe” Griffin-Young, age 77, passed away on February 21, 2026, leaving behind a wide circle of family, friends, students, and communities who were touched by his generosity, humor, and resilient spirit.
Joe was born on March 12, 1948, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Marcella and Matthew Griffin. He was later adopted and lovingly raised in Doylestown, Pennsylvania by Claude (Bud) and Doris Young, who gave him a home and a neighborhood that would remain central to his life. He grew up surrounded by family and lifelong friendships, and those connections remained important to him throughout his life.
At St. Christopher School, Father Judge and later Central Bucks High School, Class of 1966, Joe quickly made a name for himself as both a dedicated student and a talented athlete. He played football for the legendary Coach Mike Pettine who was a lifelong friend and mentor. He also earned varsity letters in football, basketball, and baseball, and carried his competitive spirit and love of sports with him for the rest of his life. Later on, Joe even tried out for the PGA Tour—an experience he enjoyed recounting—but eventually decided that golf was far more enjoyable when played simply for the love of the game, especially with his grandsons.
Joe’s career path took a few turns before he found the calling that suited him best. He worked in law enforcement and later in the trucking industry, experiences that gave him plenty of life perspective. Ultimately, he discovered that his true gift was teaching. After earning his Master of Education degree from Arcadia University, Joe joined the faculty at Bucks County Technical High School, where he spent 16 years teaching mathematics.
To his students, he was simply “Mr. G.” More than a teacher, he was a mentor, sponsor, and steady presence who believed in the potential of the young people he worked with. He took pride in guiding students who needed encouragement and was deeply respected by those who passed through his classroom.
Outside of work, Joe built a life rich with friendships and simple pleasures. He loved to travel and made it a point to visit family and friends across the country during the winter months. During the warmer seasons, he could often be found at Ringing Rocks Campground, a place filled with laughter, campfires, and a close-knit circle of friends. He also spent meaningful time within the sober home community in Jamison, where he formed strong bonds and found support among friends who became like family.
Joe loved to laugh, dance, dream big, and had a special affection for animals, especially his cats, and was always happy to dog sit for dear friends at Camp Jean’s. He enjoyed good conversation, time around the campground, traveling to visit dear family and keeping up with his lifelong “gang” of high school friends.
He was also a loyal Philadelphia sports fan, rarely missing a chance to cheer for the Eagles or the Phillies. But perhaps nothing brought him more pride than watching his grandsons compete in college sports, following their rugby and baseball games with the same enthusiasm he once brought to his own athletic pursuits.
Joe is survived by his daughter Laurie Frayne and her husband Bill; his son Jimmy; and his beloved grandsons Liam and Damian Frayne. He is also survived by his sisters Doreen McVaugh (Richard) of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, and Danielle Griffin of Fort Collins, Colorado; his half-brother Michael Strauss; and a large extended family of cousins, nieces, nephews, a grandnephew, grandniece and great grandnephew.
He was preceded in death by his adoptive parents Claude (Bud) and Doris, his parents Marcella and Matthew Griffin, their children and his siblings Vickki, Stevie, and Johnny.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at Reed and Steinbach Funeral Home in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Calling hours will be from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., followed by a prayer and memorial service at 11:00 a.m.
Joe will be remembered for his resilience, generosity, easygoing spirit and infectious laugh that made people feel welcome in his presence. Whether in a classroom, around a campground fire, at a ballgame, on the golf course or simply sharing stories with friends and joking with family, Joe had a way of connecting with people and leaving them better for having known him.
In lieu of flowers, the family will establish a memorial scholarship at Bucks County Technical High School’s Foundation for Educational Excellence. Information on how to contribute will be shared in the near future.
