Joseph A. Rothwein

d. June 25, 2025

Joseph Aloysius Rothwein, age 99, of Doylestown, PA passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 25, 2025. He was the husband of the late Marie Antoinette Rothwein, to whom he was married for 42 years prior to her death in September of 2000. Born in Roxborough in 1925, he was the son of the late Joseph and Dorothy Rothwein. Graduating from Roman Catholic High School in 1942, he then joined the United States Navy achieving the rank of ensign while stationed in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He also graduated from the University of New Mexico during that time.

Having a wife and seven children, Joe was very dedicated to supporting his family. He worked 70 hours a week at two jobs for many years to make ends meet, and he did so without complaining. His primary occupation for most of his career was working as a financial analyst for Ford Motor Company at various locations around the Philadelphia area. In the evenings, he worked proofreading patents at the International Computaprint Corporation (ICC) which was originally located in Fort Washington, PA and later moved to Horsham, PA.

Despite his long work hours, Joe managed to be home every night for family dinner. He enjoyed spending time with the family for things like watching "Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom" and "The Wonderful World of Disney" on Sunday evenings. He also liked to spend time reading as well as watching the Eagles and the Phillies, science fiction shows and movies, and professional wrestling. And of course he took the family to church every Sunday morning at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Horsham. He and Marie also managed to go out on a "date night" on Saturdays for a number of years. Many of those dates included bowling in the Our Lady of Mount Carmel bowling league, which they enjoyed very much.

Joe and Marie moved to San Jose, CA in 1999 to enjoy the weather and live near their sons Bill and Tom. Marie passed away in September of 2000. After Marie's passing, Joe found himself walking into a coffee shop where a group of regulars welcomed him into their circle. He then continued going there to meet them every day for over 20 years. The close friendships he formed there were something he truly cherished. During this time he also took very good care of his health, going to the YMCA three days a week to work out.

While living in San Jose, Joe attended mass at Holy Family Catholic Church. In 2022, long after his wife passed, he moved back to the Philadelphia area, to the Pine Run assisted living facility in Doylestown, PA where he resided until his passing. The staff at Pine Run made him feel like family, and he made several good friends there with whom he really enjoyed spending time, and participating in the various activities for the residents.

Joe is survived by six children: William (Lynn), Terry (Kirk), Thomas (Mary), Laura (Ken), Sue Ellen (Kevin) and Peter (Ivy), 14 grandchildren: Emma, Dana, Karsen, Olivia, Jason, Eric, Tim, Kyle, Kelly, Matt, Chelsea, Tom, Melissa, Nico and five great grandchildren: Maddox, Sylvia, Logan, Harper and Milo. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marie, his brother Charles, his sister Dorothy and his eldest son, Joseph.

A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 235 East State Street in Doylestown, PA on Thursday, July 10th. The family will be available at the visitation scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m.  The mass will follow at 10:30 a.m.

"Those we love don't go away, they walk beside us every day, unseen, unheard, but always near, still loved, still missed and forever dear."
