Obituary

Karen L Broughton passed away on October 25, 2026 at her home in Jamison, PA. She battled pancreatic cancer with remarkable courage and determination in her final weeks of life, leaving behind a legacy of laughter, love, and cherished memories.

Born in Chicago, Illinois on February 13,1954, she was the beloved daughter of the late Roy and Carolyn Evensen of Des Plaines, Illinois.

Karen pursued her passion for education and learning, earning her undergraduate degree from Illinois State University before going on to complete her Master’s degree at the University of Iowa. She spent decades in the healthcare industry as an IT expert and retired from Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida.

A vibrant soul with a passion for life, Karen excelled in tennis and badminton in her early years. Throughout her life, she remained a passionate sports enthusiast and an avid collector of sports memorabilia, holding a particularly deep affection for her favorite Chicago sports teams.

In her later years, Karen found great joy on the open seas, cruising the world alongside her devoted spouse, Patricia "Trish" Goldsmith. To all who knew her, Karen will be remembered most for her genuinely hearty laugh—a joyful sound that effortlessly brought smiles to the faces of everyone in the room. She was a beloved sister, wife and a devoted friend to so many until her last day on earth.

Karen is survived by her loving spouse, Trish, and her three younger brothers, David Evensen, John Evensen, and Ken Evensen. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Roy and Carolyn Evensen, and her younger sister, Janice Evensen, who passed away earlier this year.

Trish extends her deep gratitude to so many individuals who supported her and Karen during her diagnosis and treatment. A special thank you to Ken, the best brother in the world; Sheila and Bob, the best neighbors in the world; Ray and Lisa and Russell and Tzvetan, the best friends in the world; and Kim, the caregiver who gave so much to us every day.

A virtual celebration of Karen's life is being planned. Please revisit this obituary periodically to learn of the date and time of the celebration.
