Shirley A. Gabler

d. August 10, 2025

Shirley Ann Gabler, a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, and lifelong caregiver, passed away peacefully on August 10, 2025 in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, surrounded by her family. She was 90 years old.

Born on February 7, 1935, in Vera Cruz, Pennsylvania, Shirley was known for her striking blue eyes, radiant smile, and warm, melodic voice—qualities that reflected the deep kindness and gentle strength she carried throughout her life.

Shirley graduated from Emmaus High School in 1953, where her wit, warmth, and energy made her a memorable presence. Described in her yearbook as “born to be a socialite,” she was celebrated for her “incessant chattering,” “color-changing coiffure,” and her knack for getting friends where they needed to go. Her classmates fondly imagined, “Oh, to be a patient with Shirley as the lady in white.” While she joked of becoming a “millionaire old maid,” her true path was always clear—serving others. At Emmaus, she was active in the class play, Glee club, chorus, and student government, where she served as secretary. She also led as President of the Arts and Crafts Club and contributed as a yearbook typist—early signs of her leadership and creativity.

Following high school, Shirley pursued a nursing diploma at St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing, where she excelled in both academics and campus life. She served as Treasurer and then President of the Student Government, Secretary of SNAP, and a member of the yearbook staff and chorus. Affectionately known as “Shirl,” she was admired by her classmates for her warmth, dedication, and enthusiasm for life.

She began her career as a Visiting Nurse for the City of Allentown, providing compassionate care to patients in their homes. She later served at a doctor’s office in Doylestown, worked with clients at the Shape Up weight-loss clinic, and ultimately concluded her career as a nurse at the Bucks County Correctional Facility—a role in which she brought dignity and care to one of the most underserved populations. Across every stage of her career, Shirley's work was defined by empathy, integrity, and a steadfast commitment to the well-being of others.

Shirley was the beloved wife of the late Rev. Karl A. Gabler, a United Church of Christ minister and former executive director of the Bucks County Housing Authority. Together, they shared a life of faith, community service, and love. As a pastor’s wife, Shirley quietly supported congregations throughout Bethlehem, Tinicum, and Bucks County, offering her steady presence and warm hospitality wherever it was needed.

A longtime member of Salem United Church of Christ in Doylestown, Shirley was deeply involved in her church community, finding spiritual strength and fellowship that nourished her throughout her life.

Shirley and Karl made their home in Doylestown, where they raised their sons and created a welcoming home filled with laughter, compassion, and enduring values. She was a devoted mother and proud grandmother, always present, always encouraging, and endlessly loving.

Shirley was the cherished daughter of Raymond W. H. Muth and Emma M. Muth (née Klan). Raymond, a native of Vera Cruz, was a lifelong musician and community leader who played drums in multiple bands, including the Marine Band for over 50 years. He served as a township supervisor, road supervisor, and Democratic committee member, leaving a legacy of service and music. Emma worked as a cook and silk warper, was active in her church and numerous senior groups, and was a constant source of support in Shirley’s life.

Shirley is survived by her sons: Phillip Gabler and his wife Patricia of Doylestown, and Erik Gabler of Phoenix, Arizona; and by her beloved grandchildren: Lily Gabler, Kimberly Gabler and her spouse Skylar Katz, and Emily Gabler and her spouse Luke Rosina. She was preceded in death by her husband, Karl, in 2008, as well as by her parents and other beloved family members.

Shirley A. Gabler lived a life marked by compassion, quiet strength, and unwavering care for others. Her legacy endures in the countless lives she touched through her work, her faith, and her love for her family.

Relatives and friends are invited to her memorial service at 2 p.m., Sunday, September 14, 2025 at Salem United Church of Christ, 186 East Court St, Doylestown, PA 18901, where the family will greet guests from 1 p.m., until the time of the service. Interment will be private.
