Timothy E. Boland

d. May 15, 2025

Timothy E. Boland of Doylestown, PA died peacefully on May 15th, 2025, one month shy of his 101st birthday. A long-time resident of Conyngham, PA, Tim was born on June 15, 1924 in Dunmore, PA; the son of Michael and Ellen (Nellie) Boland.

He began his working career after graduating from high school when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy after the start of WWII. His first ship, the USS Swerve, was sunk off the coast of Anzio, Italy, in 1944. He later served in the Philippines, Okinawa, and in the Occupation of Japan. After the War, Tim attended Catholic University of America on the GI Bill and graduated with a degree in electrical engineering. Following an initial job with the Department of the Navy, Tim became a manager at the Pennsylvania Power and Light Co. in Hazleton, PA, where he remained for over 38 years, until his retirement in 1990.

Tim lived his life focused on family, faith, and community. A devoted father and husband, he was married to his wife, Evelyn, for 67 years, until her death in April 2020. Tim and Evie were a founding family in the new St. John Bosco church, and Tim was highly involved in many roles in the congregation over the years. Tim was also involved in the CVCO, United Way and the Minsi Trails Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He was particularly proud of the multiple terms he spent on the Conyngham Boro council; the last two as President.

He quickly learned, however, that his career had been nothing more than a training exercise designed to prepare him for retirement. When not working in his new roles as primary landscaper and maintenance foreman at the family house and cottage, Tim worked on his golf game, planned tailgate parties for Penn State football games, and continued to volunteer with several local non-profits. He was particularly active with Meals on Wheels, where he served for over 20 years, often bringing his grandchildren along as he did his routes. Tim and Evie also maintained an active social life in their retirement years and traveled throughout Europe and Asia with their church travel group.

Above all, Tim enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Whether taking a grandson for daily walks through Conyngham or traveling across the country to help with family vacations, Tim and Evie relished the role of grandparents-on-call. This was particularly true in summers, when Tim would gather the grandchildren at the lake house to build boats with pieces of scrap wood, go fishing in the rowboat, and play games with them until bedtime.

Tim is survived by his five devoted sons and their families: Timothy Boland Jr. and wife Linda of Upper Macungie, PA; Thomas Boland of St. Petersburg, FL; Mark Boland and wife Carol of Newtown, CT.; John Boland and wife Jennifer of Sugarloaf, PA.; and David Boland and wife Caroline of Doylestown, PA. Tim is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Tim was pre-deceased by Evie and by his brother John Boland and sisters Margaret Boland and Laura Flanagan.

A funeral Mass celebrating Tim’s wonderful life will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 7, 2025 at St. John Bosco Roman Catholic Church, 573 State Route 93, Conyngham, where the family will greet guests from 9 a.m., until the time of Mass.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks friends and family to consider memorial contributions in Tim’s name be made to Meals-on-Wheels of Greater Hazleton.
